TONNA YOUTH 12 – 32 PONTARDULAIS YOUTH

Yet another wet Saturday saw Pontardulais visit Tonna. A really poor turnout of players saw Tonna only able to field 14 players this week.  Tonna started the game and immediately set to work through the forwards with strong direct driving. All the early game was Tonna’s and with a Gareth Davies at 10 with strong pairing Joey King & Warren Hicks at centre the simple short passing game was looking good.  Pontardulais stood firm to the pounding and when in possession looked to go a little wider than Tonna and from near enough their first visit into Tonna territory crossed the line after repeated recycling and spreading the field.  Tonna looked comfortable in possession but a little predictable, the defence was good from Pontardulais and they managed to pick off an unlikely try after pinching the ball from a Tonna lineout drive and their flanker beating 2 defenders on his race to the line. At half time 0-12 to Pontardulais but Tonna certainly still in the game.

Callum Mcphee was forced to leave the field shortly after the restart which left Tonna down to 13 players.  With less numbers on the field the spaces opened up and with the weather now improving the pace of the game picked up. Tonna dug deep and battered away but when possession was lost they were punished by 2 quick counter tries.  With 2 less forwards Tonna’s driving game was not really working so quicker ball was given out and Gareth Davies stepped and stretched his way over the line and Elliot Bradbury’s conversion made it 22-7.  Pontardulais used the ball to spread Tonna and good handling saw them bag 2 more unconverted tries.  Not done yet though Tonna’s fitness again told and after an excellent spell of possession Warren Hicks rode a tackle to touch down to bring it finally to 32-12.

Tries:- Gareth Davies, Warren Hicks

Con:- Elliot Bradbury

A great effort by the players who turned up with some very creditable performances, you can all be proud of the commitment you put in. With a better turn out and commitment from the others, these are the games we could win. A good turnout for TRAINING and match days is required for us to really move on.  A big thanks to everybody who turned up

PYLE YOUTH 10 – 18 TONNA YOUTH

TONNA STICK IT OUT TILL THE END

Certainly not an every day run of the mill Saturday afternoon for Tonna Youth.  A different type of selection discussion for the coaches this week due to the luxury of being able to field 23 players which included 8 players making their first appearance of the season with 3 of them being their first time in Tonna colours.  The starting line up had a familiar look to it as the boys who had done so well the previous week got the nod again for this one.  Playing with the wind but against the slope Tonna made a reasonable start with some good driving making the hard yards and trying to release the back line into the spaces that this very wide field offered but handling errors and inaccurate passing was posing as much of an obstacle as the opposition.  Although making good yardage the offloading game that worked so well the previous week was not happening with runners too often going alone and being isolated or forcing impossible passes. Tonna were having most of the play but Pyle were showing that there were not going to be bossed around with their back row making some sound hits and with their back line running straight and hard at pace Tonna were also made to work hard to cover their counters. As the game settled Tonna were spending more time in the Pyle danger zone but were kept out by some good defending despite the efforts of the Tonna stronger larger forwards and drives of Captain Rees Jones and ever present 2nd rowers Mike Turner & Matthew Rawlinson.  The break through did eventually come after 15mins and it was outside half Adam James who got the score after supporting a back line break and receiving an inside pass to power over.  In the windy conditions the conversion went wide but Tonna were off the mark now and hoping to settle down, the chances of that happening were reduced within minutes of the restart with the injury withdrawals of wing Kieran Snyder and influential No8 and Captain Rhys Jones. Two debutants replaced them in James Thomas on the wing and Resolven recruit Nathan Jenkins coming into the back row.  Both settled into things well and Tonna settled down, the lineouts were going well again with accurate throwing from Chris Jones  and the scrum looked comfortable with Tom Harrison giving his larger opponent a difficult time.  The backs were now finding more spaces and making good progress with centres Danny Gould & Joey King showing strong running and being supported by the skilful running of Jake Issac, only the execution of the final pass was prevention further scores and chance after chance went begging, things were just not going for Tonna and when Joey King crashed over the line taking a couple of defenders with him only to be denied by the ref being unsighted things couldn’t get much worse.  Unfortunately they got a lot worse for Tonna as from the resulting 5metre scrum and looking good for a score, the ball was nudged forward to hand the feed to Pyle who broke down field and ended up sending their pacey winger over in the corner for a very unlikely equalising score. With no need to panic but a few alarm bells ringing Tonna responded well with the back row boys Callum Mcphee and Craig Giggsy Howells supporting around the fringes and following the backs on their forward breaks, but again the chances were wasted with too eager over running of the ball & dropped passes.  Despite Pyles best efforts the pressure would have to tell and at last a back line break led to Jake Isaac joining the line and stepping inside for a good finish to restore Tonna’s lead. Pyle kept coming back and with pace behind they looked to kick long and outchase the Tonna defence but good cover by Nathan Jones as usual and new boy James Thomas kept the line intact. At half time 10-5 to Tonna.

2nd half saw Tom Blizzard come on at 10 with Adam James moving back to fullback for Jake Isaac. Against the wind now the heavens opened but Tonna looked comfortable at being forced to keep the ball in hand and kept possession away from Pyle for long periods. Tonna were doing so much right but letting themselves down with silly errors and some poor decisions.  The Pyle backs were finding it hard to get near the Tonna boys with Gareth Davies accuracy of passing and options offered to No.10 Tom Blizzard by his centres and now new full back Jacob King playing his first game since a lengthy injury.  Tonna’s inability to score showed again as a period of good rucking & driving led to the Pyle defence being split open only for the ball to be dropped over the line with not a defender around.  Remarkably when the next score came it was from Pyle who’s kick & chase downfield led to a comedy of errors in trying to seal possession and the ball ending up in the Pyle centres hands to race 25 metres into the corner to level the scores at 10-10.  More changes for Tonna saw John Orral come on the wing for his first game and make a good impression with his will to look for work and run hard, also Darren Gethin came into the back row for new boy Nathan Jenkins who also showed up well.  Tonna were getting penalised far too often and it gave Pyle an easy escape from pressure and nerves were starting to jangle with time running down.  Tonna set up a ruck platform 25 metres out & central and delivered perfect ball to Tom Blizzard for a drop goal, as a reflection of the day unfortunately he did a Rhys Priestland impression and hooked it slightly wide. A rare Tonna penalty soon after gave the chance to redeem and with no mistake Tonna moved on to 13-10. As in each week so far the last 10minutes belonged to Tonna but Pyle would not let this game go and tackled soundly. Drive after drive was repelled until eventually as they ran out of defenders as Daniel Dickenson took a short pass to show impressive strength to barge over for his 3rd try in 2 games and at last make the game safe for Tonna.  At full time 18-10 to Tonna.

Tries:- Adam James, Jake Isaac, Daniel Dickenson

Pen:- Tomos Blizzard

TONNA YOUTH 46 – 17 NEATH ATH YOUTH

Tonna’s first home game of the season couldn’t have been more of a crunch match with the arrival of closest neighbours Neath Athletic, this season though only pride and bragging rights (along with a few old scores) were at stake with the Athletic taking part in the league above Tonna.

Tonna were looking to build on the week before performance and keep up the high tempo physical game but cut down on the errors that left them frustrated with last weeks draw.  Immediately from the kick off Neath failed to collect cleanly and were driven straight into touch for a Tonna lineout 30 metres out. Chris Jones throwing in got it spot on and with ever reliable Craig Giggs Howells collecting clean ball Tonna began their drive to the line, rolling the maul and then popping from the ruck they made it within 5metres before Neath seemed to have any answer, some good gain line defence kept the likes of Damien Clifford and Matthew Rawlinson just short but with the ball slipped to Daniel Dickenson so close out he just powered over for the first try with just 2 minutes gone, Elliot Bradley added the conversion for 7-0.

With the wind at their backs and such a good start Tonna looked to get straight back into Neath territory but some bad decision making, handling errors and wayward kicking meant that for the next 20 minutes they hardly left their half as they kept handing the ball back to Neath to run at them, from a missed clearance kick Neath countered and set up a quick central ruck and spread the ball our left for their pacey fullback to join the line to make the overlap and breeze over for a good try.  Within 5 minutes Neath were ahead, with Tonna totally losing their shape and way and yet again missing touch their classy No10 paced around some disorganised defence to set his winger free down the left touchline, with plenty of cover coming across field the danger looked to be covered but with a single sidestep infield they were all wrong footed and left a straight run to under the posts.

Tonna now trailed 10-7 and with only 10 mins left of the half and wind advantage. Thankfully Tonna got their act together and with ball in hand settled down and started doing the basics well again and kept possession.  The forward were now really starting to show their superiority, the driving and rucking game was well organised and mixed in with some excellent offloads Tonna were on the Neath line again, another pop to Daniel Dickenson saw him drive over for his second try and restore the lead at 14-10. With only minutes left from the restart another score was required to build a lead for the second half against the wind, it wasn’t only the forwards who were now making the yards and with some lovely back play passing into gaps and straight running and support from midfield trio Gareth Davies, Danny Gould and Lewis Jones taking Tonna again deep into Neath danger zone, being held up just short the backs fanned out left joined by numerous forward which gave a huge overlap, with everybody screaming to go left Tom Beans Harrison backed himself and went right and with his strength took the Neath defenders over with him to score.

HT 19-10 to Tonna.

Half time was reflection time, it was time to control this game and blitz Neath from the off, basics were all that was required and to put into practice what we train at. This half was as good a performance of skill, determination, hard work and support rugby that could have been wished for. Very oddly straight from the off Tonna got into their stride, driving in and tying in the Neath forward then releasing the backs who continually hit holes in the defence line, the continuity was maintained with Giggsy popping up everywhere even on the wing and having a couple of sprints (must be a downhill slope) and Captain Rhys Jones who again led a superb example of support play and power.  Neath just kept Tonna out for a short while but the superior fitness was already telling and when centre Danny Gould latched onto Mike Turners bursting run and skilful offload to dive over the line it was going to be a long afternoon for them.  With tails up and smiles all around Tonna played some lovely stuff, now being able to go wider and know the support was there to carry on, Gareth Davies (at 10 today) was causing problem with his strength and stepping and his pinpoint passing was getting Danny Gould into space to feed fellow centre Lewis Jones and supporting full back Jake Isac who showed good ability in running from deep, from one such move the centres split the line to feed hard working Nathan Jones on the wing who cut inside to race 30 metres under the posts for a lovely try.

Neath still had their odd moments of possession and attack but only their classy ‘10’ really caused any problems, the one on one defence of Tonna was good and with the forwards organised by Rhys Jones and Elliot Bradley Neath struggled for any continuity.  Line breaks were now coming at will with support runners coming from deeper and in pairs offering the options, driving straight down the middle of the field unselfish offload after offload led to hooker Chris Jones flying over under the posts.  With their rival beaten Tonna produced times of total rugby which even if against beaten opposition requires skill and fitness, driving tight and spreading wide at pace with inside support.  With all the team looking to offload it was good to see the wide boys getting the ball and no selfishness creep in, Kieran Snyder was set free some 35metres out right on the touchline and with a flat out straight sprint to the corner he was bundled into touch just before making a super effort to touch down.  The relief for Neath was not for long though and more of the same came their way, forever going backwards at ruck and maul and then spread wide and back again a centre field pick and drive movement let to Matthew Rawlinson crossing for Tonna’s last of 7 try’s (after he had stepped the 10 twice, chipped the fullback and rounded the winger J). Neath were not quite finished and their 10 got the last points of the day as the ref blew up 7 mins early to leave the score 46-17 to Tonna.

Tries:- Daniel Dickenson (2), Tom Harrison, Danny Gould, Nathan Jones, Chris Jones, Matthew Rawlinson

Cons:- Elliot Bradley (4)

Pen:- Elliot Bradley (1)

A really good display from everybody today, the attitude was spot on and the work done in training showed on the field today which was particularly pleasing, the younger players really showed up today but well done to every one of you on a good individual, and team performance. As always thanks to all of you who turned out!!

AMMAN UTD 5 – 5 TONNA YOUTH

The first weekend of the season saw Tonna travel to play Amman Utd on a very wet windy afternoon.

As with every new season everyone was anxious to see how their preparations had gone and what the player response would be.  Pre season turnouts had been generally OK but had tailed off towards the end regrettably. However Tonna travelled with a full team of player with some very familiar faces returning from past junior seasons. With the very tricky conditions it was never going to be an open match and playing simple controlled rugby was the instruction from the off.  Playing down a slight slope with the wind behind them Tonna started well and played the first 20 mins almost exclusive in Amman territory. The scrum was going well with the Daniel Dickinson having moved across to accommodate Chris Jones taking over as hooker. Forward drives were making good yardage with some intelligent short pop passing, unfortunately with handling conditions being so bad, spilt ball in contact was a too familiar frustration.  The breakthrough did come though around the 20min mark with Captain and inside centre Rhys Jones again bursting onto a short pass and hitting the gap like a downhill runaway JCB with the handbrake off and breaking the tackle to sprint 25metres for a well worked try.  Amman Utd came straight back at Tonna but were punished everytime they lost the ball by some good positional kicking from Elliot Bradley along with good chasing by Nathan Jones on the wing.

The second half had everything against Tonna, the slope, rain and wind and for long periods it seemed the ref was too, with a succession of penalties and missed knock ons.  To their credit the players just got on with the game and had to defend soundly as they were pinned in their own half for long periods. Amman were now moving the ball a little wider but with Danny Gould partnering Rhys Jones in the centre it was all under control. With Amman on top and the penalty count mounting the inevitable happened and No8 Wes  was harshly yellow carded for illegally playing the ball at a ruck.  Just before the 10min binning was up Amman decided to run a penalty 5m out and non existent shocking defending allowed their second row to run straight over the try line for the simplest of try’s and the previous hard work was gone. The conversion was missed with scores at 5-5.

Territory was still all Amman but with no real penetration and defence looking comfortable, Tonna looked much more dangerous when they did get the ball and produced some excellent linking and support movements later on, as the game neared the end Tonna looked far stronger and fitter than their opponents  (could it be that pre season training pays off?) and looked odds on to snatch the game with the last move, a lineout catch and controlled drive for 25m was halted right on the try line and knocked on with Elliot Bradley waiting to pounce.

The game ended as a draw of 5-5.

A good tester for a first up match but much tougher games to come, starting next week against Neath Athletic.

A big thank you as always to everybody who turned out for us, if you keep it together and train we can have a successful enjoyable season.

TONMAWR – ‘TEARS & TANTRUMS’
Osprey League ‘OC’ 26/03/2011
Tonna Youth 18pts v Tonmawr Youth 16pts

Tonna youth’s league match at Tonmawr offered the opportunity to complete an unprecedented double over their near rivals and get their league form back on track.  A few very late withdrawals meant Tonna left with a slightly smaller squad than hoped that included 11 players who were in their first year of youth rugby.
The side were welcomed to Pontrhydyfen  by blazing sunshine and nothing else as no representative of the opposition was available to help in finding the location of the facilities or to hand out the Orienteering map and compass required to locate the field.

With a nice wide field and the much larger Tonmawr pack it was clear that Tonna were in for a battle up front and had to look to go wide to gain advantage.  The game started at the high pace Tonna required with recycled ball being moved at every occasion, with confidence high Tonna refused a straight forward kick at goal with scrum half Gareth Davies taking a quick tap and dart making some good yardage, the arriving support unfortunately knocked the ball on and the chance was lost.  Far too many handling errors in the first 10 minutes hampered scoring opportunities provided by solid clearing out by Dan Dickinson, Tom Harrison, Mathew Rawlinson & Mike Turner with the ever present back row support provided by Wade ‘like a salmon’ Parry, Craig ‘Giggsy’ Howells & Rhys ‘Juggernaut’ Jones.

Having survived the early pressure it was now Tonna’s turn to look to it’s defence.  The larger pack of Tonmawr along with their organised drives and mauls provided a perfect platform to release their back line at will, the Tonna defence stood firm with numerous attacks being stopped before the gain line by the organisation and commitment of Nicky Fisher at 10, and strong centre pairing of Alex Davies and Warren Hicks, the attacks were becoming relentless but Tonna somehow stood firm with some intelligent cover tackles being made by both wings Nathan Jones and Elliot Bradley and any kicks through being punished by the long boot of Tomos Blizzard.  Tonmawr eventually opened the scoring with a straight forward penalty for offside at the ruck. Tonna had survived a 20 minute battering so could be happy to be only trailing by 3 points.
Straight from the restart Tonmawr were at it again and Tonna seeming to be unable to get
their hands on the ball, a problem not helped by the Tonna lineout becoming less and less reliable despite the efforts of Wade Parry showing the athleticism of a ‘Romanian Rhythmic Gymnast’ to no avail, the efficient front line jumping of Tonmawr was totally disrupting the Tonna boys.  It was a real derby match now with big hits coming in from both sides up front and behind and the ruck area resembling a WWF bout at times, Adam James who is very good at being annoying was doing so to good effect to the Tonmawr boys with his constant sniping and counter rucking catching the scrum half out on a couple of occasions, unfortunately with his new trendy red streak in his hair resembling him to escaped Mackaw he didn’t escape the notice of the referee and was penalised a few times and warned for being too eager.  Giving penalties away, resulting in lineouts in our own 22 proved decisive.  From a lineout the inevitable catch and drive came from Tonmawr that trundled over the Tonna line but with the fantastic spirit of the Tonna lads showing through again the defensive pressure caused a knock on in the act of grounding.  The respite eventually ran out as a pick and drive forage into the Tonna 22  eventually left an overlap on the left hand which wing Elliot Bradley could do nothing to prevent but his forcing the touch down to be wide out resulted in the conversion going wide and Tonna being 8-0 down and really needing to get into the game.
Tonna needed to get ball for the back line to use and move the heavy Tonmawr pack around in the heat, digging in and hitting rucks hard some possession and momentum was gained and with Gareth Davies keeping the back row occupied with his darts, his then quick deliver to Nicky Fisher allowed his accurate distribution to create space for centres Warren Hicks and Alex Davies to exploit with strong straight running or feed the outside boys of  Nathan Jones and Elliot Bradley, Tonna looked much more comfortable now and knew if they could run at
Tonmawr the rewards were there, with Tonmawr under pressure and the tables very much turned they missed clearance kicks to touch which were now run back by full back Tomas Blizzard, who, with his fast football feet and ability to side step somebody in a phone box  proved a productive outlet, from one such return somehow the Tonna pack got to him at the breakdown and presenting perfect ball, the ball was quickly moved out to centre Alex Davies who made a perfect outside break between the centres and then stepped the full back and paced his way over the line for a classic score.  Unfortunately the conversion went wide but Tonna were now back in the game at 8-5 and the break in play gave a welcome chance to catch some breath and take on some nice warm water.
Hard work by the whole 15 had kept Tonna in the game, so no silly mistakes were needed now before half time,
From the restart unfortunately the Red Mackaw was caught being too eager with his work at the ruck again and was very fortunate not to get yellow carded, so with only 2 minutes to go to half time Tonmawr stretched the lead to 11-5.

At half time the game plan was clear, keep up the physicality in defence to force mistakes and move the ball wide.  With 4 of the Tonna front 5 being in their first season they had stood up admirably so far but now had to dig even deeper, 2 changes were made in the pack with Callum Mcphee and Sam Richards coming on, 2nd row Mike Turner left the field after giving a physical and yet another improved performance.
It was hoped the Tonmawr pack would tire 2nd half and Tonna did win more possession from the off and the physicality was now forcing Tonmawr mistakes, and with Rhys Jones now
being on the front foot and making yards a more structured phase play was developing, however it was the defence again that proved the difference as with Tonmawr choosing to try go wide, the Tonna back line closed them down forcing a dropped pass for Alex Davies to race on to and show he has a nose for the white line to match Daniella Westbook.  Tom Blizzard took over the kicking duties and the conversion took Tonna into a 11-12 lead and the locals not being very happy.
Tonna were still having a terrible time at the lineout but were managing to contain the Tonmawr pack with good close work from Craig Howells and Mathew Rawlinson and the fresher legs of Callum Mcphee meant he was always in the thick of the action or offering support off the fringes. Tonna made their final change with tough tackling Nathan Jones making way for Kieran Snyder who has only just qualified for youth rugby and shown good promise in defence and attack.  Tonna were now on top and yet another penalty at the ruck offered Tom Blizzard the chance to stretch the lead, he pushed the kick wide but from the resulting drop out the whole game was to change and have move twists and turns than an Alton Towers roller coaster. On gathering the dropout  a Tonmawr player came blatantly offside at the ruck again to kill the ball which resulted in a simple yellow card decision which was not met with any pleasure from the players or side line watchers, claiming the Red Mackaw was still getting away with it.  With the remonstrations still going on Tom Blizzard
had the difficult chance of a long penalty attempt wide out, a good strike saw the ball sail over just inside the post, but with the touch judge Dai ‘Laser sight’ Cole and the Tonmawr representative disagreeing it was left to the ref to decide, and with the touchline barrage continuing the ref awarded the 3pts to make it now18-11. (Video evidence provided by Owain Davies later showed that Dai’s eyes were perfectly correct even at the age of 62 and the kick was clearly over.)  This unfortunately lead to mass dissatisfaction from the Tonmawr onlookers and players with toys leaving the pram from all angles, this obviously had a negative effect on the Tonmawr players concentration as immediately from the restart a Tonmawr prop took out a leaping Sam Richards in the air with the precision of a Iraqi Scud Missile which left no option but to present a 2nd yellow card and leave Tonmawr with 13 players and surely looking down the barrel of defeat.
With their composure restored though, Tonmawr to their credit somehow managed to keep control of the ball and territory while the sin bin clock ran down, they battered away at the Tonna boys who stood firm and at times during breaks of play the pitch resembled a battle scene from ‘Call of Duty’ with bodies strewn everywhere, thankfully Ryan on the medical
duties managed to patch up and keep everybody on the field during a busy day for him.  Tonmawr survived the 2 yellow card and pushed harder for the converted try to bring them level and with yet another twist Tonna were suddenly down to 14 players with Rhys Jones rather unluckily being carded at the ruck, with his loss of his physicality it was now going to be squeaky bum time with only 6 minutes to go.  Relentless drives from Tonmawr were met by gain line tackles but eventually Tonmawr broke through wide out again on the overlap but being forced to ground out wide proved vital as the conversion was missed to make it 16-18 to Tonna with 3 minutes on the clock.
Any score would now seal the game for either side and with the Tonna restart not going 10 metres, Tonmawr ripped into Tonna from the scrum and again drove into the 22, the pop and drive tactics were gaining ground again and with Tonna unable to really challenge at the ruck for fear of conceding a penalty it was up to the first up gain line defence to hit the ball carriers back, with time now run out Tonmawr moved wide off a ruck and looked odds on to score only for a tremendous double hit to cause a knock on and end a brutal game as 16-18 to Tonna Youth and complete a magnificent league double to the delight of the Coaches and supporters who had witnessed a true physical team effort from a very young outfit and secured another win in a difficult division for them since moving up to ‘OC’.  Being gracious in victory the Tonna players waited to clap off the Tonmawr team as is tradition but not so gracious in defeat the Tonmawr team did not, their indiscipline maybe showing off the field as well?
Tonna had shown there is more than one way to skin a cat, and the Tonmawr tiger was tamed by pure hard work, never say die attitude and always applying the pressure when you don’t have the ball to force mistakes, a good team ethic was evident today, so get to training and keep eating the Spinach. WELL DONE LADS !!
Also thanks to Owain Davies for providing the video coverage, today was a game Owain was itching to be involved in as a bustling backrower but sadly he is recovering from a facial injury sustained against Aberavon Quins and has undergone cosmetic surgery on his nose, he is now apparently saving for cosmetic surgery on his breasts and promises the boys to return with new improved and bigger hits. (I think that’s what he said)

Tonna v Taibach
A young Tonna side went down to play this cup against a big and powerful unit, knowing they had thier work cut out to get anything from the game. Taibach took their full advantage of their big pack putting Tonna under a lot of pressure, but it was Tonna who opened up the scoring by Number 9 Gareth Davies going over with Nicky fisher converting. This shocked the Taibach side and scored three quick tires by their hooker to leave the score Tonna 7 Taibach 24.
The second half saw Tonna score try of the match through Captain Alex Davies, who brought the score to Tonna 14 Taibach 24. With Nicky Fisher converting a try and penalty.
This left the final score...

Dap’s Diary
A great effort by everyone, especially Rhys Jones, Owen Davies and Damien Clifford. If we put this much effort and commitment into each game we will get our rewards.

Tonna V Resolven
Tonna welcomed a very young resolven youth side who were up against a side who were determined to register their first league win of the season.
The game started and almost immediately captain Alex Davies stormed over for his first of his four tries. A great move of the back row saw Gareth Davies score near the post, then Hooker Daniel Dickinson stormed over with vice captain Rhys Jones going over himself with Nicky Fisher kicking over all the tries.
This left the final score...

Well done boys

04/09/10 - Tonna youth 28pts v Cwmavon youth 00pts
Tonna youth season started with a home fixture against Cwmavon with new skipper Alex Davies and new coaching staff hoping that the good pre-season will pay of for the hard work put in by the boys.

Straight from the kick off Tonna's pack put pressure on the Cwmavon line with Rhys Jones going over only to be declined by the ref. Not long after scrum half Gareth Davies used the back row, and crushed over on Tonna's opening try of the season, Number 10 Nicky Fisher converting. After early pressure Cwmavon found their feet only to give away 2 penalties, of which both again converted by Number 10 Nicky Fisher.

Halftime - Tonna 13 Cwmavon 0
With the game settling down and both teams giving a good account up front, Tonna then scored two tries by left wing Jacob King supplied by the quick hands of the Tonna backs of which his brother Joeseph King inside fed him to race up the field to score near the posts, of which Nicky Fisher converting. The game was still evenly contested but with Tonna having the edge upfront with Damien Clifford, Rhys Jones both outstanding kept Tonna pack on top. The final points of the game saw Nicky Fisher converting, only to inspire Cwmavon pressure right on the Tonna line, but the home defence held holding the final score.....
Tonna 28 Cwmavon 0

Daps Diary:
This was a good performance all round, but more effort will be needed for the difficult season ahead, let's all pull together. Well done boys, let's keep improving game by game!

24/4/10 Tonna Yth 21 V Aberavon Quins Yth 26
After the last game between these side this promised to to be a hard contest,it lived up to that but also produced some entertaining rugby.Tonna were down to thirteen players due to players unavailable,or not bothered to turn up(shame bet they can all make the last game of the season when the can are given out)so two boys from Baglan helped out.T Powell and C Bailey. The game was played on a hard and firm pitch which was ideal for running rugby.Tonna took the lead after pressure in the Quins half,C Bailey ripped the ball out of the Quins centre to race under the posts,Ryan Jenkins playing outside half slotted over the conversion.Jacob King playing his first game for the youth after representing the Boys Clubs Of wales last week in Belgium was solid in defence as was his brother in the centre. The Quins scored four tries in the first half with Gavin Richards getting a try and Ryan kicking the conversion.

In the secound half both teams carried on playing some good rugby, but both defences cancelling out any threat.Tonna got another try on the final whistle through C Bailey with Ryan getting the extra points with a touch line kick.Adam James played well before leaving the field,Steve Gibson,Owen Davies,Lewis Nesbitt and Craig Howells worked hard in the pack as did Gavin Richards,Michael Corish and Ryan Jenkins in the backs. Both Gareth Lewis and Michael Perring played well but will have to work on their fitness ahead of next season when they make the step up to the seniors.

10/04/2010 Aberavon Quins Yth 9 V Tonna Yth 13

Tonna went away with a bare fifteen for this tough match with the Quins, but two Athletic players turned up to help out.The Quins were the biggest team for Tonna to come up against this season and they new they had a hard task in front of them and to a man they produce a fine performance.Steve Gibson,Daniel Dickerson and Gareth Lewis were solid in the front row, also the secound row of Lewis Nesbitt and Leon Ward with Damien Clifford,Owen Davies and Craig Howells worked tirelessly against a bigger pack. The Quins took the lead with a penalty, with Alex Davies slotting one over Tonna .Quins went further ahead with another penalty. But before halftime Alex dropped a goal to go in even at the interval.

Up beat from last weeks result we travel up the valley to take on Cwmgrach in our forth league game.Any thoughts of an easy victory where put to bed

when Tonna lost the ball in the Cwm twenty two for them to kick ahead and score a try under the posts with them kicking the conversion with only two minutes of the game gone.Tonna then started to put the pressure on and were rewarded with a penalty on ten minutes luke Davies kicking the points.Tonna kept up the pressure with Gareth Davies ,Alex Davies and Gavin Richards making some good brakes with Joe King getting very close but for some last ditch tackling by the Cwm defence. The front five of Perring,Sly,Lewis,Nesbitt and Parry worked hard supplying plenty of possession but still Cwm held out.Against the run of play Cwm scored ten points within five minutes they added a penalty and after some week tackling another try under the posts with the conversion. This inspired Tonna to score a well worked try by Michael Corish after some good work by Gavin,Gareth ,Alex combining well to send Michael over.Luke adding the conversion

There was no score in the secound half although Tonna had three attempts disaloud. The back row of Kyle Davies,Craig Howells and Rhys Jones worked hard all day especially in the tackle area Gareth Lewis ,Michael Perring and Thomas Sly did well in the loose its a pity they don't get the chance to show what they can do in the scrum as yet again our opponents went for uncontested scums.Rayn Jenkins is improving with every game and it was nice to have Scott Jones back from injury. The boys could not give any more 85%possession and territory and still come away with no win

The result speaks for itself,we don't like being beaten.Bouncing back from a heavy loss to Baglan(63-0)the week before.Tonna played some of the most attractive attacking rugby for a number of seasons scoring twelve tries in the process.Although Glyncorrwg
were a much bigger side Tonna out scrummaged thier opponents and gained good lineout ball through out the game releasing the backs who looked very hungry and Sharp with the ball in hand.Rhys Jones,Thomas Sly and Owen Davies (stepping into the front row when Gareth Lewis went off) did very well in both the scrum and around the park.Gavin Richards and Gareth Davies have formed a very good understanding and look as if the have played a number of seasons together already.

Tonna,s second home league game and although they lost it was a far better performance than the two previous games.Tonna had a bare fifteen and due to people dropping out had no front row so the scrums were uncontested ,but the game still played at a fast pace by both teams.Ponty opened the score with a try close to the posts which they also converted. Minutes later they increased thier score with a penalty.Tonna pick them selves up and put together some good attacking moves Gareth Davies made a half brake then fed Luke Davies who after making fifteen yards popped the ball to Gavin Richards who was then pulled down by some desperate Ponty tackling. The try for Tonna after some good work by the forwards Gareth Lewis,Owen Davies Craig Howells working hard to get Rhys Davies over with Luke adding the conversion.

Resolven Yth 24pts V Tonna Yth 10pts - 19th Sept 2009

Up the valley for the local derby against Resolven Yth,we managed to get seventeen players ,two extra from the week before so things are looking up.The game started off with Tonna putting on the early pressure with Wade Parry supplying some good line out ball, but the Resolven defence stood strong.Tonna went into the lead with a well struck penalty by Luke Davies playing centre this week(second row last week).Resolven came back strong before the half ended with a try near the posts whitch they converted.
HT Resolven Yth 7 V Tonna Yth 3
With Tonna playing down hill in the second half the advantage should have been with the away team ,but it was Resolven who took advantage off a weak blind side defence for them to add another try and conversion to thier score.Gareth Davies playing at outside half
made a couple off brakes through the Resolven defence with Tonna only missing thier chances by dropping the last pass at the important time or the support not being up with play.Tonna did come back into the game with Rhys Davies scoring near the posts with the help of John Hopkins,Thomas Sly,Michael Perring and Gavin Richards,Luke adding the conversion.Tonna continued to put pressure on but lost a line out on the Resolven five metre line for them to brake away and score another try.

With Tonna playing well as individuals they need to play as a team if they are to improve, they gave away thier fourth try in the last minute.
(MOM Gareth Davies distributed well and made some good brakes in only his second game drafted in at outside half)

Tonna Yth 5pts V Skewen Yth 17pts - 5th Sept 2009

The first league game of the season turned out to be very hard contest.

In the first half Tonna dominated the scrum area putting pressure on the Skewen pack, but failing to put any points on the board.Skewen relied on the counter attack braking away with any loose ball available. They would have opened their account if it wasn't for a try saving tackle by Wade Parry, who also got to his feet and turned the ball over for Tonna.
HT Tonna Yth 0 V Skewen Yth 0
In the second half Skewen then opted for uncontested scrums which changed the game, bringing on more back row forwards to make their pack more mobile. They took the lead with a try near
the posts failing with the conversion.Tonna came back into the game scoring under the posts, with so many bodies on the ball it was hard to see who was the last one to ground it.They deserved the score after some hard work by John Hopkins,Gareth Lewis,Owen Davies ,Rhys Jones,Wade Parry and Gavin Richards driving to the line .After all that hard work they rushed the conversion missing their target. That miss came back to haunt them as Skewen pilled on the pressure keeping Tonna in thier own half for the rest of the game an added two further tries and a conversion.Tonna defence finally cracked but up until then some hard work by Luke Davies,Alex Davies,Michael Corish,Ryan Jenkins,Craig Howells kept them out.

Tonna Yth 5pts V Bryntawe Yth 32pts - 28th Feb 09
The highs and lows of youth rugby, last week we were up for a game this week we never got out of low gear.We gave away some easy tries due weak tackling and seemed to kick away the possession in the wrong area of the field.Due to injuries in the first fifteen minutes of the game a couple of boys had to play out of position Craig Howells coming on as a wing replacement, with Joe King reverting to full back in place of Ryan Jenkins who had to leave the field with what at the time looked like a broken wrist.Captain for the game Kyle Davies led by example, helped by the hard working Lewis Nesbitt and Gavin Richards.
HT Tonna Yth 0 V Bryntawe Yth 18
In the secound half Tonna looked to have woken up and opened the scoring in the first five minutes. From the kick off the ball was one by Michael Perring who with the help of the forwards, were awarded the scrum in Bryn's 22 from which Gavin made a brake from the base of the scrum to beat the defence to score near the posts.Unfortunately Tonna went back to sleep, and had to defend for most of the secound half. The plus side is that all but three of the squad on the day are not available next season,so it was a good learning curve for the coaches to see what they can build on for next year.Perhaps now some will realise that drinking and staying out late on Friday night doesn't help your rugby on saturday.M.O.M Gavin Richards

In the secound period Tonna went back into their shell allowing the Ath who had made a few changes at the interval to gain the upper hand again, scoring a try near the posts which they converted. The ref keep penalizing Rhodri for putting the ball in crooked although the home supporters blamed the Ath pack for pushing before the ball came in ,from one of these infringements they added a penalty to go further ahead.Tonna started to battle away and were rewarded for their efforts to level the score after some sustained pressure for Rhodri to score and alex to covert to level the score. The Ath came back at Tonna but their defence held strong. In the end a draw was a fair result for both sets of players who gave their all.Wade Parry,Lewis Nesbitt did well in the line out,as did Alex Davies,Joe King

Tonna Yth 48 V Seven Sisters Yth 0
Any thoughts that Tonna had of the game was going to be easy was soon put to bed, with the way Seven played in the opening quarter ,stopping Tonna from going forward with some strong tackling. With Tonna having some players unavailable due to work Craig Howells made his debut from the start in the back row.Tonna started to win some line out ball through W Parry and L Nesbitt, this enabled the backs to get some attacking moves started. The deadlock was briken by inspirational captain Rhodri Manning who broke from the 22 to score near the posts, Alex Davies converting.Tonna managed three further tries in the first half Luke Davies from a lineout, Grant Bailey from a well worked move with Rhodri getting his 2nd.
HT Tonna Yth 22 V S Sisters 0
In the 2nd half Seven had the first fifteen minutes again, during this time Tonna lost outside half Alex so Luke had to step in the fray .Another u/16,s product made his debut Rhys Jones coming on in the pack.Once Tonna weathered the Seven storm, they got their game going again and in the 2nd period scored a further four tries all of which were scored with breath taking flowing rugby.Andrew fields scoring two,Josh Wellington one and play anywhere Andrew Stuckey getting one.Dai Gregory played well,as did Kyle Daveis,Jamie Goslin,Gavin Richards and Joe King.It was nice to see Owen Davies come on after being out injured for a long time. Will Alex keep his kicking duties after Luke fired over three conversions from the touch line ? .M.O.M toss up between Rhodri or Grant, But i think Grant edged it after making a tremendous break instead of going himself unselfishly passed to curls to score his 2nd under the post

Seven Sisters Yth 0 v Tonna Yth 49
Tonna traveled up the Dulias valley to play their fifth league game of the season,on a very cold and windy January day.Seven had the strong wind with them in the first half, and nearly open the scoring in the first ten minutes with a penalty, whitch their kicker put wide .Tonna came into the game, only for them to either loose the ball in contact or giving away a penalty with witch Seven then pumped down field.Tonna finally open the deadlock with a try by captain Rhodri Manning Alex failing with the conversion.Within two minutes Tonna scored their second try through David Gregory who crashed over the line after some hard work by Rodri,Luke Davies,Frazer Richards.Michael Perrin and Wade Parry.
HT Seven Yth ) v Tonna Yth 10
In the second half and with the wind in their favour Tonna camped them selves in the Seven half.Wade Parry,Lewis Nesbitt and Scott Jones supplied some Very good line out ball and it was nice to see the backs making some lovely breaks. With the forwards and backs handling the ball exceptionally well in the cold conditions, tries,in the second half were bound to come.Tonna managed to score a further six tries in the second half,Rodri getting another two with,Andrew Field 1,Grant Baily 1,Michael Perrin 1 and Alex Davies getting a try and kicking three conversions and a penalty.Andrew scoring one of the best trys for many a season, starting in the Tonna 22 by Grant racing all the way into Sevens 22 before slipping the ball to Andrew to score under the posts.Full credit to the Seven players who battle hard write up to the final whistle.Joe King ,Chris Prichard and Ryan Jenkins did very well in defence. M.O.M Wade Parry

Tonna Yth 5 V Skewen Yth 10 - 24th Jan 09
The game started at a very high tempo with both teams trying to play attacking rugby.Skewen started putting the early pressure on keeping Tonna in their half with some high balls.which the back three of Joe King,Ryan Jenkins and Gavin Richards delt with adequately.Tonna started to come into the game with some strong running by Rodri Manning,Alex Davies,Grant Bailey. and Andrew Fields.Alex also putting some good kicks in to set up attacking plays. With both teams giving 100% it wasn't before the dead lock was broken,Skewen scored the first points with a try in the corner ,Skewen failing with the conversion.Tonna picked them selves up and replied with in minutes ,with a try by Rodri, after some pressure after a high kick by Alex,Wade Parry, caught the Skewen full back and with the help off the rest of the pack drove towards the Skewen line ,where Rodri weaved his magic to score.Alex coming close to add the extra points.
HT Tonna Yth 5 V Skewen Yth 5
In the second half Skewen gained the upper hand with Tonna spending longer periods in their own 22 defending. But although the Tonna defenders tackled hard,Kyle Davies ,Lewis Nesbitt,Andrew Stuckey,Scott Jones,Wade and Tom P
arry with ten minutes left Skewen scored thier seconed try to win a very competitive match. There wasn't much between the to teams but Skewen adapted the the referees own interpretation of the offside law than Tonna did. M.O.M Kyle Davies

Tonna Yth 10 v Aberavon Quins Yth 0 - 17th Jan 09
It was the first game for over a month due to the Xmas break and the weather. The Quins had the advantage of a strong wind at their backs, putting some early pressure on the Tonna line. But with some strong tackling and with the forwards picking and driving Tonna slowly came into the game, nearly taking the lead with a penalty whitch Alex Davies pushed just wide. With Scott Jones and Lewis Nesbitt winning some good lineout ball the forwards with Rodri Manning,Kyle Davies and Michael Perrin driving forward came close to scoring
HT Tonna Yth 0 v Aberavon Yth 0

In the second half and with the wind with them Tonna started play some good attacking rugby with Grant Bailey,Gavin Richards and Kerion Beasley making some strong runs into the Quins half. After some pressure Tonna took the lead through a penalty by Alex Davies.Within ten minutes they increased their score with a well worked try in the corner, a kick by Alex behind the Quins defence was gathered by Gavin who beat two defenders before off loading to Lewis Nesbitt to round the last defender to score a well made try.Alex adding the conversion. The Quins came back strongly, going over twice but the Tonna Defence held them up on both occasions and in the end deserved their win. M.O.M Lewis Nesbitt

 Trebanos Yth 36 v Tonna Yth 9 - 6th Dec 08
Tonna went away with a bare fifteen players with a number of them either carrying an injury or full of flue, one of those to put up his hand and play was Gavin Richards although full of flue and picking up an ankle injury to last the whole game.Trebanos managed to score three trys in the first half with
Tonna's only reply through Alex Davies boot converting a long range penalty.Tonna competed well in the tight and some good tackling by A Field , and Joe King Luke Davies the score could have been greater.
HT Trebanos Yth 15 v Tonna Yth 3
Trebonos kept the pressure up in the second half and with the added advantage of the use of their full subs bench they ran in another three trys which they converted.Tonna stuck at it and to the boys credit they never dropped their heads and managed to get two further penalties that Alex converted. The points to take out of this game are we have to be more disciplined on the field giving to many penalties away for back chatting, and we have to react quicker when they are awarded against us,it cost us at least two trys today.M.O.M Luke Davies

THE DOWN SIDE IS THE BOYS WHO DID NOT TURN UP TODAY WITHOUT AT LEAST PHONING TO LET US KNOW (YOU LET YOUR TEAM MATES DOWN)

 Aberavon Quins Yth 15 v Tonna Yth 9 -21st Nov 08
This was our third league game ,it being a rearranged fixture so as it was on a Friday there were a couple of players unavailable due to work. But after last weeks win we were still confident we could get a result. With the strong wind in our favour in the first half we kept the Quins in their half for for long periods ,with Alex Davies opening the scoring as early as the first five minutes with a well struck penalty. The referee frustrated both sides with constant use of his whistle, not letting the game flow.So the only scoring chances came only through penalty kicks ,unfortunately most of the penalty's were were around the half way line just outside Alex's range, although just before the interval he did add another penalty.

H/T - Aberavon Q Yth 0 v Tonna Yth 6
In the second half the Quins pressed forward with the wind at their backs and after some pressure they scored a controversial try in the corner ,Tonna claiming he was held up over the line, but the ref awarding a try .The Quins attacked again and after some sloppy play under our posts they got the second try which they converted.Tonna came back at the Quin's and Alex was successful with a third penalty. The Quins came back into our half and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts on full time to seal their win.The boys gave a good account of them selves with D Gregory,T Parry and G Lewis working hard, and G Richards ,G Baily ,S Clarke and R Jenkins strong in defence.M.O.M Alex Davies

Pontardawe Yth 0 v Tonna Yth 3 -14th Nov 08
The score did not compliment the territorial advantage that Tonna had in this game, with something like 91% and 60% possession Tonna could not finish some good attacking play. Some credit mite go to Pontadawe for killing the ball on the floor, but we have to look at the options we took there were times the ball should have come out to the backs.Tonna took the lead after 20 Min's through a well taken penalty by Alex Davies which proved to be the only score of the game.Tonna thought they had scored a try when Gareth Lewis drove over the line under the posts only for the ref to disallow the effort for what he judged to be a double movement.
H/T - Pontardawe Yth 0 v Tonna Yth 3
Although the score was low it was a very entertaining game.Tonna only had a bare fifteen and a number of players had to play out of position.Gavin Richards stepped into the scrumhalf spot and did well keeping the Ponty backrow bisey, but he also did his fair share of tackling around the scrum area.Luke Davies made some strong runs in the centre, and Andrew Fields was solid in defence.D Gregory, T Parry ,G lewis with A Stuckey and L Nesbitt scrummage well. While K Davies lead by example with S Jones and it was nice to see J Wellington back playing. One to watch and M.O.M Ryan Jenkins who had another fine game at full back.Training well attended the only problem and we can put our finger on it ,is that why people train twice a week and then don't bother to turn up for a game on Saturday???.

Tonna Yth 10 v Cwmgrach Yth 10 - 7th Nov 08
On a terrible night with the pitch very wet and muddy both teams tried to play some attractive rugby to entertain a very large crowed considering the weather.Cwmgrach opened the score against the run of play.Tonna putting a lot of pressure in the visitors 22 their outside half clearing with a long kick which was chased down by the Cwm right wing to hack through and score in the corner.Tonna came back again with several forward drives towards Cwm's line one of these resulting in Alex Davies going over in the corner.
H/T - Tonna 5 v Cwmgrach 5
In the second half the game see-sawed between the respected 22's.Full credit must be given to referee Wayne Griffiths in the way he let the game flow playing advantage at every opportunity.Tonna broke the deadlock with some individual skill by Wade Harry who kicked though the Cwm defence to gather his kick and score in the corner.Cwm equalized by way of a penalty try,to be honest the ref got it right, the try would have been the pick of the match had he gone over. The cwm centre made a brake from his own 22 weaving his way through the Tonna defenders only to have his legs taken away from him illegally five metres short of the line, the conversion was charged down making it a fare result in the end for both teams. Rayn Jenkins had good game at scrumhalf,as did A Field and J King but M.O.M was Luke Davies who drove at the Cwm defence at opportunity

Neath Ath Yth 25 v Tonna Yth 5 - 1st Nov 08

The game started off at a very fast pace ,with both teams looking for the weakness in either defence to exploit and open the score .The Athletic forwards had the upper hand in the first half supplying their backs with quality possession to run at the Tonna backs always s having the extra man at hand ,Which they used to full advantage scoring three tries to no reply in the first half.Unfortunately what we said we had to do in the pre match talk didn't carry forward into the match
H/T - Neath Ath 15 Tonna 5
In the second half we came more into the game and with a few changes in personnel the forwards started to work harder and after some good work firstly by L Nesbitt winning the line out then some good driving by K Davies and finally R Manning with the help of M Perin and the rest of the pack, enabling Rhodri to score Tonna's try.The game opened up again but with Tonna kicking away possession to often they gave to many opportunities for the Athletic to get their backs running into space and adding two further try's.Tonna M.o.m Lewis Nesbitt

Tonna Yth 12 v Skewen Yth 5 - 25th Oct 08
A
big game for Tonna having gone down heavily away to today's visitors on the last day of the season. After last weeks result the confidence of the squad has picked up and they are starting to play some entertaining rugby.
Both teams played some good attacking rugby in the first half with each team coming close to opening the score, but for all their endeavor it was a stalemate at the interval

H/T - Tonna 0 v Skewen 0
In the second half,Tonna went on the attack from the kick off and after some good work firstly by the forwards driving up the touch line,Rhori Manning pealed of and claimed a try in the corner.Skewen attacked at every opportunity, but Tonna managed to turn the ball over on their own ten yard line ,firstly forwards and backs showing some good handling skills to eventually free Alex Davies who still had some work to do before scoring in the corner, adding the extra points with the conversion.Skewen hit back with a try by Ryan Davies. It was hard to pick out individuals because the hole squad of eighteen Tonna players were outstanding on the day.Lets put another good performance in next weeks league game.

Cwmtwrch Yth 8 v Tonna Yth 17 - 18th Oct 08
Tonna were missing several regulars but still had nineteen players available for selection. This gave a chance to see some of the squad play in different positions.
Tonna put Cwmtwrch under a lot cf pressure in the opening quarter but were unable to turn them into points playing with the slope.Cwmtwrch backs looked Sharpe and after some pressure Tonna gave away a penalty with which converted to take a three point lead which they kept until half time.
The game was evenly matched until Alex Davies showed some good footballing skills to chip over the defence collect the ball and score in the corner missing the conversion.Tonna scored their second through some quick thinking by scrumhalf Gavin Richards racing away to score near the posts,Alex adding the conversion.Cwm came back strong scoring a try.The game was one by one of the best tries so far this season with Gavin racing from his own ten yard line past several chasing defenders to score in the corner.Players who stood out this week.Ryan Jenkins(f/back)Simon Clarke(wing)Kyle Davies,Keiron Besley,Lewis Nesbitt,Michael Perrin and Andrew Stuckey (forwards).Special mention to Steve Davies(prop)who played well for Cwmtwrch

Tonna Yth 10 v Trebanos Yth 47- 11th Oct 08
A very disappointing result, the forwards could not supply any good quality ball for the backs, and played most of the game on the back foot.If we are going to compete in the league we are going to have to work a lot harder around the field.
Some players worked hard Kerion Besley never stopped running and Gavin Richards cap ted a fine performance scoring Tonna,s only try braking away from the base of a scrum to score near the posts.Alex Davies slotted over the conversion adding to an earlier penalty
Joe King played his first game for the youth and looks to be a very good prospect, coming very close to scoring in the second half.

Tonna Yth v Cwmgrach Yth - 4th Oct 08
The only winner was the weather,we arrived on time got changed only for the Ref to call the game off at the last minute. So a quick dash back to the club to watch the senior sides play. All of the boys decided to get wet, K Besley,F Richards and G Richards came on for the 2nd XV against Neath Ath coming on in the second half giving a good account of them selves. But we know that Frazer only played to have food after the game. Some of the other boys braved the weather to watch both games with Teg and me.But Rhodri being the great leader on the field showed that the boys will follow him,so they all got wet in the club downing a few pints instead( as if Peggey needed any encouragement )

Tonna Yth 13 v Resolven Yth 10 - 27th Sept 08
What an entertaining game both sides tried to play open attacking rugby.Tonna had a full squad due to their team photo lets hope they get the same turn out in training this week before their first league game.
After some early pressure by Tonna in the visitors 22,they were awarded a penalty against the Resolven back line being off side,Alex Davies slotting it over.Resolven came into the game using their very fast backs to run at every opportunity, after some pressure Tonna gave away a penalty at a ruck which they converted. The see-sawed with both teams unlucky to add a score due to the determination of both defences.Tonna eventually score due to some good work by the forwards driving towards the Resolven line, resulting in R Manning scoring close to the posts,A Davies adding the conversion.Resolven came back strongly and after some good work by their forwards and backs were awarded a penalty five yards out ,which they took quickly resulting in their open side flanker ? Rees scoring ,the home team claiming he was short of the line, but the ref awarding the try which they also converted.
Tonna Yth 10 v Resolven Yth 10
The second half was much the same as the first, both teams trying to play rugby ,but both defences working hard to stop them. For Tonna the back line of A Davies,G Bailey. J Lewis,A Field,S Clarke and G Richards tackled well throughout.G Bailey making a brake from his own line well into the visitors 22 ,were the forwards linked up with some good driving by M Perrin,L Davies and A Stuckey to gain another penalty for Tonna. This penalty turned out to crucial score winning the game for Tonna ( A Davies converting). In the last minute of the game Resolven thought they had scored a winning try only to be pulled back to what the ref adjudged a forward pass. Sometimes ref's decision's GO AGAINST YOU and FOR YOU

Tonna Yth 3 v Baglan Yth 59 - 20th Sept 08
Tonna started the game well and unlucky to score the games first try ,their early pressure paid off a drop goal by Alex Davies giving them the lead.Minutes later they had the chance to increase their lead with a penalty , but the attempt pulled away at the last minute.Baglan started to get the upper hand, spreading the ball wide and scoring two quick tries. The game was hard fought and Tonna had to use their three subs before halft time. Due to theirs and missed tackles Baglan increased their lead with three further tries converting all three.
H/T -Tonna 3 Baglan 31
The second half continued with Tonna trying to get back in the game but loosing the ball in contact Baglan used their fast backs to pull further away.Scoring a further four tries converting all.On the plus side the lineouts were better this week L Nesbitt,S Jones and K Besley winning their share.G Baily back from injury and A Davies tackled well in the midfield and again Captain R Manning was outstanding, its a pity we cant bottle his energy and aggression to rub onto some of his team mates.

     Ystradgynlais Yth 48 Tonna Yth 13    -    13th Sept 08
With boys injured and dropping out on the morning of the game Tonna went away with a bare fifteen players.Tonna dominated the first fifteen minutes of the game and took the lead through a penalty by Alex Davies . Ystrads packs then came into play scoring two quick tries ,although Tonna had the upper hand in the scrums Ystrad dominated the line-outs from one on the halfway line they spread the ball out to the wing to score a third try of the half which they converted.
In the second half ystrad scored four more tries all converted plus a penalty.Tonna still battled on Alex Davies converting a penalty and conversion from a penalty try awarded under the posts.Tom Parry played well out on the wing,as did Owen Davies at hooker who took three against the head. The back row of Scott Jones,Kyle Davies and Keiron Besley worked hard as did Rhodri Manning and James Lewis making his debut in the centre.Gavin Richards had to come of due to head cut ,the jury is out whether this will improve his looks at this moment the bets are 50/50.

    Taibach Yth 22 Tonna Yth 12   -    6th Sept 08
Tonna Youth went away to Taibach with sixteen players due to players injured from last weeks win and unavailable because of holidays.
The team gave a good account of them selves showing last weeks result was not a fluke but shows what the squad can accomplish if they keep up the work in training.
Although the Taibach pack was much bigger than Tonna's they opted for uncontested scrums so the game lost a little momentum at the set-piece.Both teams tried to play some go attacking rugby with the forwards of both sides driving forward at every opportunity .Taibach tried to get the upper hand with the win on their backs but some good defencive play by both the Tonna backs and backrow managed to contain Taibach.
Taibach got the first brake through scoring the games first try out wide in the corner missing the conversion, they scored two more in the next ten minutes of play kicking one conversion's.The second try looking to have been knocked on five meters from the try line.
Halftime : Taibach 17 Tonna 0
If it had been last season the boys heads would have dropped and the flood gates opened. Not this year they picked themselves up and touch the game to Taibach. Playing up hill with the wind with them some good driving by the Tonna midfield and with the close support of the forwards and the quick thinking of Gavin Richards he romped away to score in the corner conversion missed.Taibach came back at Tonna but some last minute tackling held them off the game see sawed up and down the pitch with Taibach scoring another try .Tonna picked them selves up and gained the upper hand forwards and backs driving at the Taibach line and they were rewarded with their second try by Gavin Richards with Alex Davies converting.
Rodri Manning as captain and lead from the front
